Aroma-AI is an experimental entertainment application created by DigitalTouch around a deliberately impossible idea: what if a smartphone could deliver an aroma through its speaker?

The application does not generate real smells. Instead, it combines touch, sound, haptic feedback, animation, suggestion, and humour to create a short sensory illusion. The screen provides the ritual, the device supplies synchronized feedback, and the user’s imagination supplies the aroma.

Originally conceived as an April Fools’ product, Aroma-AI was developed with the finish and interaction quality of a real consumer application. That contrast is central to the experience: the premise is playful, but the implementation is intentionally polished.

Rub the screen. Calibrate the engine. Imagine the aroma.

The interaction is designed to be understood immediately. Users choose an available aroma — including strawberry, lemon, banana, coffee, garlic, and mint — and rub the represented object directly on the screen.

The fictional AI Smell Engine responds in real time. A calibration indicator advances with the gesture while animations, status messages, audio, and vibration build anticipation. When progress reaches 100%, the application “unlocks” the selected aroma through a coordinated sensory reveal.

Nothing physical is emitted by the phone. The effect comes from timing and association. Familiar imagery prepares an expectation, sound reinforces the character of the selected object, and haptic feedback makes the interaction feel tangible. Aroma-AI uses several ordinary device capabilities together to create an experience none of them could produce alone.

An interaction experiment disguised as an AI product

Aroma-AI playfully borrows the language of AI calibration and futuristic computation, but it does not pretend to contain scent-generating hardware or scientifically reproduce smell. The fictional technology is part of the joke and the storytelling.

The real product experiment asks a more interesting question: how strongly can interface design influence perception? A convincing experience does not always depend on a new sensor. Sometimes carefully synchronized cues can encourage the brain to construct the missing part.

The product combines:

  • a gesture-driven “rub to smell” mechanic;
  • real-time calibration and progress feedback;
  • aroma-specific visuals and animation;
  • synchronized sound cues;
  • tactile haptic feedback;
  • playful AI-style status messaging;
  • custom aroma creation and sharing;

The result is part mobile toy, part interaction-design experiment, and part commentary on the way AI products are presented.

Why a simple joke still requires careful engineering

The experience appears intentionally simple, but that simplicity depends on precise coordination. Touch gestures must be recognized continuously without feeling unresponsive. Progress has to reflect the user’s movement naturally. Animation, sound, and vibration need to enter at the right moment, reinforce one another, and culminate in a satisfying completion state.

If feedback arrives too late, repeats awkwardly, or feels disconnected from the gesture, the illusion breaks. The engineering challenge is therefore not raw computational scale; it is the quality and timing of the interaction loop.

Key implementation concerns include:

  • translating continuous touch movement into stable progress;
  • preventing accidental or inconsistent gesture completion;
  • coordinating visual, audio, and haptic states;
  • maintaining responsive frame-by-frame feedback;
  • creating distinct personalities for different aromas;
  • preserving consistent behaviour across iOS and Android;
  • packaging all required media for offline use.

This is a useful example of product engineering at a small scale: a focused idea, executed without unnecessary infrastructure, where polish is concentrated on the single interaction that defines the product.

Flutter and an offline-first architecture

Aroma-AI is built with Flutter, providing one cross-platform foundation for the iOS and Android applications. Flutter is well suited to the experience because the product depends on custom interaction, animation, and consistent visual behaviour rather than conventional content screens.

The core experience works fully offline. No account or internet connection is required to choose an aroma and use the “rub to smell” interaction. Local execution also keeps the feedback loop immediate: gesture processing, progress, visuals, sound, and haptics can respond without waiting for a network round trip.

The offline approach supports the product concept in another important way. Aroma-AI is designed as a lightweight moment of entertainment, so users can open it and understand the joke without registration, onboarding forms, or backend dependency.

According to its App Store privacy disclosure, the application does not collect user data. The product remains intentionally small, direct, and self-contained.

Honest by design

The fiction is presented openly. Aroma-AI is an entertainment app, not a scientific instrument, medical product, aromatherapy tool, or real scent generator. It makes no medical or scientific claims.

That honesty allows the concept to remain playful without misleading the user. The application invites people to participate in the illusion, share the joke, and notice how sound, touch, imagery, and expectation can combine into a surprisingly persuasive moment.

Aroma-AI demonstrates another side of DigitalTouch’s product work: the ability to take an unusual idea, identify the interaction at its centre, and turn it into a complete cross-platform application with a distinctive identity.

The challenge

Aroma-AI began with an intentionally impossible product promise: delivering a smell through a phone. The challenge was to turn that joke into a polished and convincing interaction without making false scientific claims. Every gesture, progress state, animation, sound, and vibration had to work together closely enough for imagination to complete the experience.

What was built

DigitalTouch created Aroma-AI as an experimental cross-platform entertainment product. Users select an aroma, rub the represented fruit, vegetable, or coffee bean on the screen, and watch the fictional “AI Smell Engine” calibrate. At 100%, synchronized sound, haptics, and visual effects create a playful illusion of unlocking the aroma. The product also supports custom scent creation and sharing while remaining explicit that no real smell is generated.

Technical approach

Aroma-AI is built with Flutter as a fully offline mobile experience for iOS and Android. Its central interaction coordinates gesture input, real-time progress, animation states, audio cues, and precisely timed haptic feedback. Keeping the experience local removes account and connectivity requirements, reduces latency between touch and feedback, and allows the sensory illusion to respond immediately on the device.
